Stained glass & leaded lights

Hand crafted in the traditional way

Leaded lights or lead lights are door panels or windows made from separate panes of  glass. They are held together with H section lead known as cames or calmes. The joints are soldered with a solder made from a mixture of tin and lead.  Lead light cement is scrubbed into the lead cames to make the panel weatherproof .
When the lead light cement sets the panel can be cleaned and the glass polished.

The true meaning of Stained glass refers to glass which has been coloured in some way by adding various metal oxides in the factory while still in raw chemical form.

Stained glass is often referred to as  panes of hand painted of glass. The small flowers shown in the door panel below are stained yellow with silver nitrate  known as  silverstain.
Black trace lines are painted on the other side of the pane and the glass is fired in a kiln to make the design and colours permanent. .
